History

The Georgia Crushed Stone Association, Inc. was chartered with the State of Georgia on June 12, 1967.  Ben Mabson, Vulcan Materials Company was elected the first President.  The Executive Director was Morris L. Shadburn who retired as Chief Engineer of the Georgia Highway Department in 1970.  Following, Mr. Shadburn, Joseph Hitchcock was appointed Executive Director in 1970.  In 1980, George M. Howard was appointed Director and served until 1995.  Charles Machemehl succeeded him.  Jerry Gossett became the Director in 2000 and retired in 2002.  John Cardosa has served as the Executive Director since.

In 1967, the membership consisted of ten companies with a total of 25 quarries.  The overall production was approximately 25 million tons.  Increases in the usage of crushed stone has expanded the Georgia market to nearly 100 million tons produced at 77 quarry sites as late as 2006.  The first commercial quarry began operations in 1929.  It is located at Rock Chapel just north of Lithonia.  Started by Consolidated Quarries, Inc., it is now owned by Lafarge Aggregates.  The next oldest commercial quarry opened by the Weston Brooker Company near Camak, Georgia is currently owned and operated by Martin Marietta Materials.

In 2006, the Georgia Dump Truck Association was merged into the Georgia Crushed Stone Association.  The merged organization was renamed the Georgia Construction Aggregate Association.  The re-formulated association had the same number of Producer members combined with almost 150 Associate members and 100 trucking companies.

The Association continues to pursue the objectives that were first established in 1968.  These objectives are focused on establishing high ethical standards for all industry activities, advocacy with governmental and policy making agencies, educating the to the societal benefits that are provided by this industry and training of industry employees in areas of safety, environmental responsibility and professional management.

The construction aggregate industry is not only the foundation for highways and infrastructure construction but also the foundation for economic growth.
